This is the first course in the four-year sequence of Spanish language instruction. This course stresses the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing at the novice level in the three modes of communication (Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational) to enable students to communicate in both familiar and everyday contexts (introduction of self, family and friends, likes and dislikes, daily routine, food, etc.) using basic vocabulary and grammar structures. Students will be exposed to cultural components of the Spanish Speaking world, such as customs, history, art, and literature. In class, students interact with authentic materials and are encouraged to use the target language as much as possible.
