THE CHINESE DEPARTMENT OFFERS …

two systems of curriculum to tailor the needs of students’ background: For Non-Native Chinese Speakers and for Native Chinese Speakers.

For non-native Chinese speakers, we offer 3 level courses –Elementary Chinese, Intermediate Chinese and Upper-Intermediate Chinese in all four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students completing Upper Intermediate level are welcome to take other 3 elective courses—AP Chinese, Chinese Cultural Traditions and Values, and Business Chinese according to the prerequisite. The courses are also designed to increase students’ understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures of the Chinese-speaking world.

For native Chinese speakers, we offer 5 elective courses—Chinese Performing Arts, Studying Chinese through Multimedia, Chinese Literature, Advanced Business Chinese and Critical Thinking Through Chinese Novel. Those courses are designed for students to get a deeper and broader understanding of the Chinese society, and to explore the foundations of Chinese civilization and the dimensions of Chinese culture and literature.
